We are an organization set up by commerce and industry in order to emphatically promote the interests of industry. In all matters of the economy and education we are a competent and reliable partner for politicians, people working for public authorities, scientists and the general public. |
|
|
We are commited to the ideal of the social market economy. We advocate fair competition and a regulative policy based on this ideal. |
|
|
We are independent and guarantee objectivity. We are not committed to any group or individual interests. This is guaranteed by our status as a public corporation. We are the self-government of industry. As such we are independent in the execution of our duties both with the respect to our sovereign powers and with respect to services for industry and we also play an active and independent part in decision-making processes. |
|
|
We are a regional organization. In the area we cover we help shape all major economic decisions. Our area covers Dortmund, Hamm and the Unna district with its towns and boroughs of Bergkamen, Bönen, Fröndenberg, Holzwickede, Kamen, Lünen, Schwerte, Selm, Unna and Werne. |
|
|
We are no association or club which one may join or withdraw from. On the contrary, we were specifically designed by parliament as a body with statutory membership. For both our full-time and our unpaid staff this entails a particular commitment to work efficiently. |
|
|
We are an umbrella organization of the private sector with its 57.000 businesses in industry, commerce and the service industry. These are the characteristic feature of the modern economic region of the Westphalian Ruhr with its 1.2 millions inhabitants on an area of 1.049 sqm. |
| What do we intend? - The aspirations of the IHK | |

We strive to execute our statutory duties reliably, i.e. to look after the overall interests of all businesses in our area, to promote industry and, in doing so, to weigh and find compromises between the interests of individual industries and businesses. |
|

We strive to shape industry today, anticipate the future and cope with the economic problems resulting from the structural weaknesses of the past. For the Dortmund chamber the acronym IHK means: initiative, horizon, communication. (Kommunikation). |

|
We strive to promote structural change in the industries of our
area and to make the region a successful location vis-à-vis
national and international competitors. This presupposes - innovative standards of new products, - processes and systems on the basis of close cooperation between industry and science, - a wide variety of trade and service businesses, - a well-developed infrastructure together with sufficient available land for industrial estates - a large supply of different types of accommodation and a wide variety of cultural and leisure activities. We support the development of innovative fields of economic activity. We help to lay the basis for the growing prosperity and the ongoing development of the region. We give all environmental issues top priority. |

We strive to provide competent advice and to take the initiative in all questions of vocational qualification. By safeguarding a high standard of vocational training and a wide supply of further vocational training courses we strive to help to improve the conditions for job and promotion prospects in the private sector, to secure jobs and to create new jobs. |

We strive to considerably improve the image of the Westphalian Ruhr region, i.e. Dortmund, Hamm and Unna. The image of the region must be improved so that it corresponds with its physical appearance and its qualities. Image promotion is part of the promotion of trade and industry in a wider sense.. |
| How should the objectives be met? - The strategy of the IHK | |

We aim at innovation on the basis of traditional values, experience and developments. We supply know-how and are a forum for discussing new ideas and tendencies. We place new emphases and take the initiative in new fields of activity. In order to achieve our objectives we strive to find as much common ground as possible among those involved. Our strengths are: debating, convincing and finding partners. |

We are keen to offer ourselves as a comprehensive service centre to industry. With our wide range of services, we especially strive to help small and medium-sized enterprises to solve their problems. |
|
|
We do whatever is in our power to act in as specific and differentiated a manner as possible. We give direct advice, act as qualified mediators, active moderators or as active members in local, regional and supraregional committees. |
|
|
We collect, prepare, arrange and provide information, thus helping enterprises to increase their revenues and to improve their competitive situation. However, this information also consists of assessments and reports for political and administrative bodies together with suggestions and proposals for the improvement of the economic environment. |
|
|
With our regional experience we promote the interests of our member enterprises by contributing to national, European and international developments. On the other hand, we analyse supraregional developments in order to translate facts and recommendations into action so that they meet the regional and specific needs of our enterprises. |
|
|
We support our staff as their tasks and current techniques require because we can only fulfil our many and changing functions if we can rely on committed and highlymotivated employees. By means of frequent further training courses, executive training, modern technological equipment and organisational measures we enable our staff to execute their duties efficiently. The senior managemant plays an active role in the decision-making processes at all levels, thus enhancing both motivation and efficiency. |
